Hostels v. Backpackers

I’m writing this so yesterday’s post, Why Hostels Are Destroying Backpackers, doesn’t get lost in my 30 Day Challenge. One of the down-sides of writing articles everyday is that some get quickly forgotten.

Anyway, for the travelers or wanna-travelers out there, read some of the comments from yesterday. A couple hostel managers stumbled upon my site and weighed in on the issue.

I’d like to get more old-timer’s perspectives *cough Dad* on traveling and backpacking. What it was like years ago, where you stayed, interactions with locals, etc.

If you have any sort of opinion let it be heard.

Hey Derek long time no talkie. I think your points are extremely valid. Convenience is a true double edged sword. There are times when i cannot imagine my life without the convenience of my cell phone or the benefit of finding any bit of information instantly on the internet. On the flip side, I’m sure most people would agree that the convenience of fast food and Vegas wedding chapels is all bad.

Convenience IS comfort. And given 2 options, people will pick the one that benefits them the most.

Comfortable Hostel VS. Basic Hostel

You can’t blame people for wanting the best value for their money. Not everyone is traveling for the same reasons you are. I think if you were to eliminate a lot of the conveniences you had problems with, less people would travel. And I think everyone can agree that would make the world larger and more divided. The goal is to make traveling as enticing as possible for the average global youngster.

So I guess my point is that hostels should offer all the amenities you dislike. It never did anyone any good to eliminate choices, you just have to educate them and hope they make the right choices.
