8 Reasons To Love Medellin, Colombia

Here are 8 short stories that represent why I love Medellin, Colombia.

1. Friendly people

It’s my first day in Medellin. I ask a guy on the street where I can find a good place to eat. He leads me to a restaurant nearby, sits down, doesn’t order, but talks with me as I eat lunch. When I’m done we shake hands and never see each other again.

2. Beautiful Women

I’m in a crowd of thousands trying to get a view of Juanes on stage. I spot her looking at me across the sea of people. She’s a 9 easily. She screams, “You have beautiful eyes.” I yell, “Thank you.” The crowd becomes a wave and she’s swept away.

My round-up on Colombian women.

3. Paragliding

After jumping off a cliff and spiraling through the air for 30 minutes, Clay and I sit in a restaurant overlooking the whole of Medellin. A family of 7 entertains us while their 12 year old daughter practices her English. No one wants to hear about our paragliding experience. They just want to hear about us.

4. Salsa

I’m not good at salsa but it doesn’t matter. I have to try. Paula grabs me and leads me through the steps. She’s not used to leading so she stumbles a bit. I ‘take over’ and we laugh the whole time.

5. Parque Lleras

Being in Parque Lleras transports me back to Los Angeles. It’s chic and the people have money to blow (although a beer still costs under $2). But this night, instead of sitting in a swanky club, we’re in the center of the park throwing quarters to see who can come closest to the nearest crack. It’s just as fun as sweating to pumping house music.

6. Pita Burger

Rob’s Pizza Club in Sabaneta has the most delicious food concoction you’ll ever taste. Thick, juicy, meat wrapped in fluffy pita bread. Find this place. Seriously.

7. Christmas Time

I’m far, far from home on Christmas Eve, but the holiday spirit is not lost. Clay and I have joined a friend’s family for the celebrations. First we sit in a huge circle and play bingo while the dad feeds me whiskey. After I win twice (boo yah) we move outside for salsa dancing and a BBQ. It’s 3 AM and the whole family is still up dancing, drinking, and laughing.

8. Parque Periodista

You’ve read my story about Parque Periodista. It’s a can’t miss. Just bring a friend.
